On August 17, Dyonna had the great honor of delivering the Tula Lecture 2019, alongside the Representative Minister of Curaçao, Anthony Bergina. It was a huge honor for her!

In her speech, she shared a focus on unity, connections, and island societies within the Caribbean, Curaçao as the center of revolutionary conspiracies in the 18th century, the importance of women’s historiography, and the representation of Sablika, the woman who is believed to have fought for freedom alongside Tula. She also touched upon her research on slavery in museums, addressing both white-centered and black-centered museums, and the contemporary perspective on Sablika and Tula, including the movement ‘Tula Taught Me’ by Selwyn de Wind. Additionally, she made a call for the revaluation of female heroines, with the hope that a Sablika lecture will soon be held.

It was an energetic evening, which even resulted in a small standing ovation! The Tula Lecture is organized annually by Ninsee and the Vereniging Antiliaans Netwerk.
