Lecture on Identifying with Museum Exhibitions
On Tuesday, Dyonna Benett gave a lecture titled “In the Mirror of a Nation” at NAAM (…).
According to the heritage specialist, it is a sensitive subject, rooted in the formation of identity. Museums, she says, can serve as nourishment for the soul and make a significant contribution to social and societal impact.
“Presenting my thesis remains a nerve-racking moment because of the many different reactions to the terms ‘Black’- and ‘White’-centered museums. One person prefers to call the white population of Curaçao ‘Old Protestant,’ while another feels and sees the difference between Black, white, skin color, and everything in between,” says Dyonna.
The discussion was concluded with the final words of Marlon Reina:
“It’s not about Black, white, or skin color—it’s about POWER, and who held that power.”
