The Summer Carnival in Rotterdam has been added as the hundredth tradition to the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands. This was announced by the knowledge center associated with the inventory on Thursday.

The Zomercarnaval Foundation Netherlands has demonstrated that the tradition is living heritage, of great importance to cultural identity and social cohesion, and that it is actively committed to passing this vibrant heritage on to the future, according to the knowledge center.

The Zomercarnaval always takes place in the last weekend of July in Rotterdam and includes various components, including a market. The highlight is the Street Parade on Saturday, a tropical-themed carnival procession that attracts hundreds of thousands of people.

Other events on the heritage list include various flower parades, the Nijmegen Four Days March, the Passion Play in Tegelen, and the Midwinterhorn blowing in Overijssel and Gelderland.
