Dyonna Benett believes that the Rotterdam Summer Carnival should be added to the national list of cultural heritage. The 25-year-old student loves the event but fears that it may be cut due to budget cuts.
Since 1983, our country has celebrated the summer carnival every year. Dyonna is already busy preparing for this year’s carnival with the carnival group Passionada. Dyonna says, “Carnival is truly my great love.”
The event has received less funding in recent years, and Dyonna is worried that it might be entirely cut in the future. Having a spot on the intangible cultural heritage list would only benefit the summer carnival.
However, it’s still uncertain whether the application will be approved, as most events on the list are much older than the summer carnival.
On September 3, Dyonna will officially propose the summer carnival for the list. For now, it’s mostly about practicing the dance moves for this year’s carnival on July 25.
And if you want to see those dance moves, tune in to the late broadcast of Hart van Nederland.
